Marie Curie, born Maria Salomea Sklodowski was born on November 7th, 1867, in Warsaw, Poland. Maria's parents were educators, insisting the Maria and her four siblings were educated. Graduating high school at fifteen, she was first in her class. Unfortunately for a college bound Maria, the University of Warsaw did not accept women. While she was unable to attend school, she had became a governess at seventeen in order to help pay for her older sister to attend med school in Paris. Maria however, continued to study on her own in hope of one day attending college. When Maria was finally able to attend college in Paris, she had used the name "Marie" in order to appear more French. Marie lived within her means, meaning she lived in a shabby apartment and lived off of bread and tea, causing her health to suffer. Yet despite this, Marie managed to earn a masters degree in physics, a second degree in mathematics, and be top of her class.
Marie had met Pierre through a common friend, a professor helping Marie find a lab to work in. Both began work in a shared laboratory, and their mutual love of science brought them together. Marie, initially planning to move back home, refused. Marie did return home, but was refused from colleges because she was a woman. Pierre insisted she return to France to gain her PhD. The two were later married on the 26th of July, 1895. In the following years, Marie's research would help shape the world of physics.
